Preliminary and Follow-up Investigations.

The preliminary and follow-up investigation is to do with the crime, witnesses, suspects and the crime scene.

The Preliminary investigation - This part of the investigation links it to the follow up investigation but before it does, the preliminary investigation needs to be carried out perfectly so that everything is noted, pictured and information is given from the first attending officer (just in case the person has missed anything) also any safety issues that need to be handled and everything needs to be documented. Also this investigation is what can determine potential suspects, victims and witnesses, if any of those three are determined; background checks are made.

The FAO will set up a common approach path, this pathway is set up in order to prevent any evidence at the scene of the crime from being contaminated by officers, witnesses or other emergency services stepping on the evidence. Therefore this pathway shows a route around the crime scene so that no evidence is cross contaminated. The FAO will also corner off the crime scene, again to prevent any contamination to evidence or to the scene itself. Evidence is collected from the crime scene which can be in three different forms, physical, chemical or biological. The evidence is collected by scene of crime officers which is than bagged and tagged and entered in to the chain of custody. This evidence will than be sent of to forensic laboratories to be examined and tester further. Questions are than asked to any witnesses at the scene of the crime or potential suspects in order to gather as much information about what happened. Personal information such as name, address, relation to the victim, phone number etc. is taken from the witness in case they need to be contacted again for further questioning. The FAO will write a report following the events at the crime scene including names of witnesses and vital evidence that was found at the scene. The report will than be passed on to other officers involved within the investigation in order to gather all evidence taken from the crime scene in case further action needs to be taken on the investigation.

The Follow up Investigation - This procedure is for criminal investigators to evaluate evidence, interviews, interrogations and collected evidence. The follow up investigation also is to evaluate the suspects, victims and looking into the reason of why the crime was committed, this is then transferred into evidence to be used in court.

In the Billie-Jo Jenkins case the preliminary investigation's evidence lead to Sion Jenkins being charged for the murder of his foster daughter Billie-Jo, according to the route that Sion Jenkins took; during an interview he said that he had to go back on himself because it was too dangerous to do a three point turn in the road. But the police saw this as enough time to go back tho the house and murder Billie-Jo, the next piece of evidence that the court used to charge Sion with was the blood splatter on Sion's jacket.
